RESUMO

Decreased loading of the paretic lower limb and impaired weight transfer between limbs negatively impact balance control and forward progression during gait in individuals post-stroke. However, the biomechanical and neuromuscular control mechanisms underlying such impaired limb loading remain unclear, partly due to their tendency of avoiding bearing weight on the paretic limb during voluntary movement. Thus, an approach that forces individuals to more fully and rapidly load the paretic limb has been developed. The primary purpose of this study was to compare the neuromechanical responses at the ankle and knee during externally induced limb loading in people with chronic stroke versus able-bodied controls, and determine whether energy absorption capacity, measured during induced limb loading of the paretic limb, was associated with walking characteristics in individuals post-stroke. Results revealed reduced rate of energy absorption and dorsiflexion velocity at the ankle joint during induced limb loading in both the paretic and non-paretic side in individuals post-stroke compared to healthy controls. The co-contraction index was higher in the paretic ankle and knee joints compared to the non-paretic side. In addition, the rate of energy absorption at the paretic ankle joint during the induced limb loading was positively correlated with maximum walking speed and negatively correlated with double limb support duration. These findings demonstrated that deficits in ankle dorsiflexion velocity may limit the mechanical energy absorption capacity of the joint and thereby affect the lower limb loading process during gait following stroke.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice among pre-final and final year students of pharmacy, medicine, biotechnology, and business faculties about oral hygiene. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of students towards oral hygiene at a private university in Malaysia. Validated questionnaires were distributed to a convenient stratified sample of 324 students studying in the different selected faculties, namely pharmacy, medicine, biotechnology, and business, respectively. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 24.0 was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: With regard to knowledge, upon evaluation, it was seen that the students of the Faculty of Pharmacy had the highest percentage of adequate knowledge, which was statistically significant with a P-value of 0.001 and the effect size of 0.246. On the evaluation of attitudes, it was seen that the Faculty of Biotechnology had the highest positive attitudes. According to race, Malay students had the highest positive attitude among all the races that participated in the study, which showed a P-value of 0.037 with the effect size of 0.034. Regarding practice, the Faculty of Pharmacy had the lowest practice compared with the other faculties. This variable had a P-value of 0.001 and showed to have significance against the practice with an effect size of 0.193. CONCLUSION: Overall, a good attitude was seen amongst the students on their oral hygiene. It was also observed that the attitude, knowledge, and practice of the students in a private university increased with an increasing level of education.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of healthcare students (Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry) in a private university about mental health challenges (MHC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A research cross-sectional observational was conducted to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of students towards MHC at a private university in Malaysia. A validated questionnaire was distributed to 284 students studying in three different selected faculties, namely the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dentistry. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 24.0 was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Upon evaluation of knowledge, male students were having less-adequate knowledge than females (P = 0.006). Malay students were having adequate knowledge than other races about MHC. Faculty of Medicine was having adequate knowledge than other faculties (P ≤ 0.001). Regarding attitude, the Faculty of Pharmacy students had the highest positive attitudes (P = 0.001). Final year students were having a more positive attitude than pre-final year students. For the evaluation of practice, the Faculty of Dentistry students had the lowest practice compared with other faculties. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, overall, good knowledge was seen among the students of the private medical university about MHC. The medical students had adequate knowledge when compared with other faculties in the university.

Vesicular and colloidal delivery systems can be designed to control drug release spatially and temporally to improve drug efficacy and side effect profiles. Niosomes (vesicles prepared from nonionic surfactants in aqueous media) are gaining interest as an alternative vesicular delivery system as they offer advantages such as biocompatibility, chemical stability, low cost, high purity, and versatility. However, the physical stability of niosomes, like other vesicular systems, is limited by vesicle fusion, aggregation, and leakage. Proniosomes (dehydrated powder or gel formulations that spontaneously form niosomes on hydration with aqueous media) can overcome these physical stability problems and are more convenient for sterilization, storage, transport, distribution, and dosing. Proniosomes have mostly been explored for their potential to enhance transdermal and oral absorption. In this study we assess, for the first time, the potential for hydrated proniosomes to sustain systemic exposure and therapeutic effect after intravenous delivery. Proniosomes carrying the anti-inflammatory drug, flurbiprofen, were prepared by spraying different nonionic surfactants (span 20, span 40, and span 60 in varying ratios with span 80) and cholesterol onto a sorbitol carrier. The proniosome powders were characterized for surface morphology and flow properties. Niosome formation was assessed at three different hydration temperatures (25, 37, and 45 °C), and the niosomes were assessed for vesicle size, entrapment efficiency, and sterility. OLP proniosomes prepared with a high ratio of span 80 to span 20 were found to spontaneously form vesicles of small size and high drug loading on hydration with aqueous media. The OLP derived niosomes successfully sustained in vitro drug release, in vivo pharmacokinetics, and the anti-inflammatory effect of flurbiprofen in an acute (rat paw edema) model of inflammation when compared to a control solution formulation. The study demonstrates that hydrated proniosomes can prolong systemic drug exposure over 3 days and provide a sustained therapeutic effect. The developed proniosomes represent a novel approach to treat acute pain and inflammation with the potential to be administered as a single intravenous dose by a clinician at the time of injury or surgery that provides adequate relief for several days and reduces fluctuations in therapy. Similar systems loaded with different drugs have potential for broader application in anesthesia, anti-infective, antiemetic, and cancer therapy.

Objective of present study involves preparation and evaluation of floating microballoons of indometacin as a model drug, to increase its residence time in the stomach without contact with the mucosa. The microballoons were prepared by the emulsion solvent diffusion technique using different ratio of acrylic polymers (Eudragit RS100 and Eudragit S 100) as carriers. The yield of microballoons was up to 91.02 +/- 1.65%. Microballoons showed passable flow properties. On the basis of optical microscopy, particle size range was found to be ranging from 130.90 +/- 12.10 to 170.58 +/- 17.50 microm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed their spherical size, perforated smooth surface and a hollow cavity in them. Microballoons exhibited floating properties for more than 10 h. In vitro drug studies were performed in 0.1 M HCI with 0.1% SLS and phosphate buffer (pH 6.2). Different drug release kinetics models were applied for selected batches.
